MARINA Bowling Club’s South Devon Over 55’s won their league this season which took them into the Mid-Devon playoffs held at Babbacombe Bowls Club, on Wednesday, September 11.
In the first match of the morning against Brixham St Mary, Marina were sadly beaten. They then played in the afternoon against Starcross to find out who would take third place in the tournament. A dramatic finish was about to unfold.
On the rink with Dave Blandford, Mark Dumble and Mick Bryan, it came down to the last end where the team scored five shots with some very accurate bowling from Dave Blandford, losing by one shot on their rink.
This meant Fred Baker's rink needed to win their final end by two shots for Marina to grab third place in the tournament. Colin Parker and Rob Frost posted woods very close to the jack, however Starcross were holding two shots as Fred bowled his final wood which came tantalisingly close to being shot, but it wasn’t to be as it just ran through.
A valiant effort and a brilliant achievement nonetheless getting to the playoffs.

Elsewhere, Teignmouth recently held a bowls tournament and Andrew Moore, one of Marina’s younger players, won the Under 25’s Singles title.
