MORE than 9,000 drivers were caught jumping a red-light last year, a Freedom of Information (FOI) request has shown.
The number of red-light camera violations recorded by Devon and Cornwall Police in 2024 was 9,176, the FOI shows.
This is more than three times greater than 2023, where 2,737 incidents were recorded.
At present, there are 16 red-light cameras operational across Devon and Cornwall, the bulk of which are in Exeter and Plymouth, though there are cameras on Torbay Road and Newton Road.
Failure to stop for a red light can result in a £100 fine and three points, though some councils will opt for a road safety course instead.
Given the relatively low number of red-light cameras, the true number of drivers that jump red-lights is likely higher than 9,176.
