ROYAL British Legion stalwart Richard Hayward has created another of his unique Dawlish fund-raising badges.

Ex-serviceman Richard has been making the bespoke Dawlish-themed badges for the last 10 years, raising thousands of pounds for the RBL.

While they are not official Poppy Appeal badges, money raised from this year’s incarnation will go to the fund.

Former Royal Navy Master at Arms Richard launched the 2025 badge at the Royal British Legion Dawlish branch in Park Road.

Since 2015, Richard has come up with various ideas for the badges which regularly feature the town’s emblem the Black Swan.

He has enlisted some help over the years, most recently from children at Gatehouse Academy.

Last year more than 1,500 were sold.

Over the years they have become a collectors item. Many are sold worldwide with one going as far afield as Australia.

In 2019, he diverged from the badges by creating a Dawlish Remembrance car sticker.

Richard said: ‘This is my new badge for Remembrance Day for 2025.

‘I started in 2015 and there has only been one year I didn’t make one.

‘I thought it was a good idea to design a distinctive bade for the Dawlish community to wear with pride for Remembrance Day.

‘I will do it as long as I can continue.

‘Every year the badge is different but they always feature a Black Swan.

‘I hope they promote Dawlish as a town and resort as well as for the Poppy Appeal.’

Over the last 10 years, Richard’s iconic badges have raised more than £15,000.

It’s not just the badges which raise money, in 2022 Richard completed a seven hour bowls marathon at Marina Bowls Club, raising several hundred pounds for the Poppy Appeal.
