STOVER Golf Club reclaimed their South Devon League crown this weekend, facing last year’s winners Warren on the final day of the season.
The competition wasn’t played in 2020 due to covid and then Stover won it the two following years, before Warren swooped in and claimed it for themselves in 2023.
Stover beat Warren 5-2 on home soil to claim the title, finishing on a total of 43.5 points. The runners-up were Churston who amassed 39.5 points, showing the importance of this clutch Warren win.
Dainton Park meanwhile drew 3.5-3.5 with Torquay to close the season out and the aforementioned Churston beat Teignmouth.
Heading into the final fixture, just two and a half points separated the bottom trio. Dainton occupied fifth but their draw along with defeat for Teignmouth moved them up to fifth, finishing ahead of the two Ts, Torquay and Teignmouth.
Churston are the only club not to have come out on top in the SDL in the 21st century, with the honours being shared around a fair amount.
The last time that anyone won the competition three times in four years was Teignmouth GC (2014, 2015 and 2017) and whilst some clubs have enjoyed particularly fruitful runs, this is still quite the achievement.
1974 was the first year on record, as per the SDL website, making this an anniversary edition so congratulations go to Stover once again, and to everyone else for taking part and battling hard.
