THREE teams from Dawlish Women Walking Football Club took part in the first-ever Devon League fixture at the Devon FA HQ in Newton Abbot, on Sunday, September 1.

The competition, consisting of two leagues and 11 teams, will take place throughout the season at different venues across Devon.

Dawlish are joined by teams from Exeter City, Mid-Devon, Modbury Vixens, Newton Abbot’s Teign Bees, Plymouth Argyle and Taunton & District (Tads).

Dawlish Cygnets played in League One against 2 teams from both City, Argyle and Tads. They came away with a very creditable win and 4 draws. Even more impressive as, due to unavailability, they played with no substitutes.

Dawlish Swans and Dawlish Fledglings are in League Two. The Swans had a very productive afternoon and won all their matches without conceding a goal.

But the highlight of the afternoon for the club was the performance of The Fledglings (Fledgies as they are affectionately known). This group of players came together for the first time at Summer Fun Footie Sessions in July and August. They have improved and bonded to such an extent that when an opportunity came to join the league, they grabbed it with both ‘wings’.

They competed against teams who have been established for a far greater length of time than themselves and were rewarded with one drawn match and 3 closely fought, 1-nil defeats.

Next up is a round of fixtures on Sunday, November 3 and the club would like to put on record their gratitude to the league committee and Devon FA for their hard work to date.

Anyone interested in joining, please look at the club’s Facebook page for more information.
