FOUR Year 12 students from South Devon UTC in Newton Abbot saw behind the scenes how the rail network runs.
The students completed a three day work placement with Network Rail giving them a chance to take part in some hands-on learning with one of the UK’s leading infrastructure organisations.
The students are all studying at the college’s Faculty of Engineering and their placement began with a trip to Bristol Temple Meads station.
They visited several key projects, including the roof project and the eastern entrance project.
During their time they gained a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in rail infrastructure development.
The group then travelled to Dawlish to walk through different phases of the Dawlish Sea Wall project and onto the Exeter Great Western Railway train depot for a tour where they learned all about day-to-day operations.
The final day of the placement will involve a trip to Newquay Station for a full viewing of track and civil works during a blockade, followed by a visit to St Erth for a site tour of the footbridge project.
Dan Parkes, principal portfolio manager with Network Rail’s Integrated Infrastructure Team, praised the group, calling them ‘the best group of students we’ve ever had’.
The four students shared their excitement after the experience, with one already expressing interest in pursuing a career with Network Rail once he completes his studies.
Claire Plumb, headteacher at South Devon UTC, said: ‘This has been an incredible opportunity for our students to get a behind-the-scenes look at the rail infrastructure industry.
‘I am so proud the group impressed their mentors with their professionalism and enthusiasm throughout the placement.’
Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:
‘It’s brilliant this work placement has not only provided valuable insights into engineering but has also inspired the students to consider future career opportunities in the rail industry.’
