VOLUNTEERS in Starcross joined the national Great British Spring Clean to clean up the village.
Led by the Starcross Sparkles, a group of residents set up to reduce litter in the village, the event was said to have been a ‘great’ success.
The group set off from Starcross Pavilions sports field and collected a varied haul of litter and rubbish from the roads around Starcross Primary School, New Road carpark, Generals Lane, Generals Crescent, New Road around the bottom of Staplake Lane and the Golf Club, Counties Crescent and along Starcross River Beach.
With many food wrappers, drinks cans, bottles and various plastic waste as well as a boat light recovered from the beach, a total of 21kg of waste was taken off the streets and beach of Starcross.
MP Martin Wrigley joined in and arrived with his own litter-picking equipment
Huge thanks for our local MP Martin Wrigley who arrived with his own litter collection equipment.
A Starcross Sparkles member said: ‘Martin gave some really helpful advice to the group and viewed the wreckage of the various abandoned boats on the beach which are depositing more broken boat pieces, plastic and trim continually on Starcross beach.
‘The combination of perfect weather made this launch event a brilliant foundation for Starcross Sparkles litter-pick group to grow from.’
Equipment was loaned by the Waste Team at Teignbridge District Council to supplement the equipment and safety kit funded by Starcross Parish Council.’
Anyone interested in joining the next litter pick can keep an eye on the dedicated Starcross Sparkles page and turn up on the day.
The spokesman added: ‘Thanks to our wonderful volunteers and those who support us but were unable to get to the litter-pick this time.’
