PROPER use of chimney equipment was the focus of a Teignbridge fire crew’s recent training night.

Bovey Tracey Fire Station brushed-up their skills on Tuesday, March 11.

Typically, firefighters will utilise rods to manoeuvre the flue toward the source of the fire, before water is pumped in via a hose.

The crew were able to simulate a chimney by hauling a suction hose up their drill tower.

A spokesperson for Bovey Tracey Fire Station said: ‘As we approach warmer temperatures, the likelihood of us being mobilised to a chimney fire may be low, but these fires can potentially lead onto devastating domestic fires, especially if a thatched roof is involved.

‘We highly recommend that those with chimneys keep them in good working condition by keeping them clean and serviced by a professional.

‘Be mindful of what you are using as fuel and keep combustable materials clear of your fireplace.’
