DEVON Women’s Walking Football League held their penultimate round of fixtures in Exeter on Sunday, March 2.
In the glorious afternoon sunshine, the three Dawlish teams played out an exciting and competitive series of games.
The club’s over-40s team, the Cygnets, are holding their own comfortably in League 1. Plymouth Argyle seem to have the league wrapped up already, with a strong lead of nearly 20 points at the top. The Cygnets started the day in second place.
They accounted themselves well, with a win, two draws and two losses- the defeats were significant as they came against Argyle and closest rivals Taunton and District (TADs). This sees TADs move ahead of Cygnets by four points.
In League 2, the Dawlish Swans (the club’s over-50s team) have been in the top position throughout the season. They got off to a flying start, winning 2–0 against their closest rival Mid Devon.
Then followed a 2–0 loss to Teign Bees, and two more wins against the Fledgies and Modbury Vixens, 1–0 and 2-0 respectively.
The Fledgies did not have an easy afternoon. With several players absent through injury and work commitments, they lost all but one of their games, which they drew with Modbury Vixens.
As usual, they gave 100% effort but just came up short on the day. Special mention goes to their goalie Tracey Morey, who had a superb afternoon between the sticks and Julio Ounsworth for covering for absentees.
These results see the Swans extend their lead to four points from Mid Devon on 27. Teign Bes had an excellent afternoon, winning all their matches and are in 3rd place on 26 points.
The club would like to thank the referees, Exeter City Football Club Women’s Walking Football for hosting the event and Dawlish Town Council for grant funding. The final league fixture takes place on Sunday, April 6.
