A KINGSTEIGNTON care home resident has turned 100.
Kathleen Burton, known to family, friends and staff at Penns Mount as Ruth, was born on the 28th of June in 1923.
She was brought up in London and from age 16 to 20 lived through the Second World War: some of this time she was working at the Bank of England.
After marrying Jack Burton she spent the next several years as a vicar’s wife bringing up five children.
Soon after Jack took over the Parish of Ellacombe in Torquay she trained as a Montessori teacher and founded a Montessori school that allows children to learn by their natural instincts.
In her 80s she travelled to Senegal unaccompanied to work voluntarily in a school and then China to work with children.
