CONSCIENTIOUS shoppers at a Kingsteignton store have donated trolley-loads of essential items to local people.

Over the summer the Tesco Superstore on Newton Road asked the public to contribute any long-life food items they could to help Teignmouth Mutual Aid Larder.

Donations will now go to families and individuals who need it in Teignmouth and surrounding villages.

Janette Parker, the store’s Community Champion, said: ‘This time of year can be hard for many families.

‘There has been an upsurge in the number of people using the foodbank because they’re in need of food at a difficult time in their lives.

‘Volunteers at the food bank do an incredible job in helping so many people, and I want to thank all our customers for their kindness. 

‘Once more they have shown their generosity in supporting their community.’

Teignmouth Mutual Aid Larder provides weekly food parcels for local people containing main meals, fresh fruit and vegetables as well breakfasts. 

Volunteers also provide support on issues such as benefits, homelessness and debt issues.

Jackie Jackson, a volunteer at the food bank, said: ‘We always hope to be here to help families in difficulties, and so we’re very grateful to the thoughtfulness of Tesco shoppers whose generosity has made a real difference for many people.

‘This goes towards supporting families with children and the elderly, but we will also support anyone in need, whether their circumstances are due to an unemployment accident, homelessness or any other change in their personal circumstances.’
