THREE students from Teignbridge have met key members of the new Labour government’s education team at a meeting at the Department for Education.
Year 12 students Zoe Ayling and Lennon Fisher and Year 10 student Olivia Partridge from Teign School in Kingsteignton travelled to London to attend the first stakeholder meeting held by the Permanent Secretary of the DfE since the new Labour government was elected.
Susan Acland-Hood, Permanent Secretary at the DfE, hosts a monthly meeting with key partners including unions, sector organisations and the Children’s Commissioner, Ofqual and Ofsted.
A school spokesman said: ‘The meetings begin with the voice of a child to help set the tone and to remind them about what and who they are there for.
‘The students eloquently presented their hopes and aspirations for the future, addressing critical topics.’
These included the importance of breadth and of creativity in the curriculum; greater support for children with mental health issues; career advice and guidance and quality work experience; the importance of all schools being inclusive and the need for a ‘level playing field’ for all children to support those less advantaged, for example with the use of AI and technologies.
Bridget Phillipson MP, new Secretary of State for Education, spoke passionately about her vision for the future of education, which resonated deeply with the students.
One student remarked it was good to have a government that prioritises children and all students thanked their dedicated teachers and staff who have provided them with invaluable opportunities.
Afterwards the students met new ministers The Rt Hon Jacqui Smith and Catherine McKinnell MP.
Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:
‘I am grateful our student representatives had the opportunity to speak directly to the policymakers who shape education in this country.
‘I was immensely impressed by how articulately and passionately they shared their ideas.
‘The students found the whole experience extremely uplifting, and the staff who accompanied them commented on the positive nature of the meeting and the atmosphere at the DfE.
‘We all left with a renewed sense of hope and purpose, and I appreciate the Minister taking the time to listen to our young people.’
