POLICE in Ashburton say a man in his 60s has been arrested in connection with a number of offences in the town.

The charges follow a number of alleged break-ins at properties in the area.

Investigations are ongoing to other reports of individuals trying to gain access to houses.

One reported incident has been found to be a geniune error by a neighbour.

Now officers are advising householders to be aware and ensure their security is reviewed.

A spokesman for Ashburton police said: ‘We are pleased to advise that following one of the reports to us the matter was looked into and found to be a genuine error by a neighbour.

‘Because Ashburton is such a wonderful community meaning that you may feel confident enough to leave your front doors open or cars open.

‘Please review your personal security.

‘We suggest keeping your doors locked for your home and vehicles if parked on the street, possibly look into investing in a Ring style camera doorbell or security cameras, and maybe even sensor activated light as a deterrent.

‘Please be assured that we are doing as much as we can to keep the community safe.

‘Regarding the commercial burglaries which took place last year which has generated a lot of public interest, this is still very much live and ongoing.

‘As officers working in the community, we can feel how frustrated people are and sympathise, we just ask that you are patient whilst this is ongoing.

‘If you are a victim of crime or wish to let us know of incidents occurring in the town please report to us directly, so that your local neighbourhood team can look into it by calling 101 or online.’
