NEW Mayor of Teignmouth Iain Palmer said he was ‘absolutely delighted’ to take over the reigns.
Iain, 68, was voted in to the position at the town council’s annual meeting.
He replaces outgoing mayor Peter Williams and will be accompanied by his wife of 49 years Jackie.
Speaking to the Mid Devon Advertiser, Cllr Palmer said: ‘I am looking forward to promoting the town and its independent businesses to residents and attract holiday makers to Teignmouth.
‘We have so many festivals and events coming up this year.
‘I have worked in Teignmouth for 20 years, my wife and I ran the Eastcliff cafe and although I live in Paignton now, I come to Teignmouth many times a week.
‘Now I have retired, I have more time on my hands.
‘I miss working in the town but in my mind, I’m still 21.’
Cllr Palmer has, in the past, worked as a lifeguard at Dawlish Warren beach and is still a member of the lifesaving club.
He said: ‘It’s going to be a very busy and exciting year.’
