THE Bovey Tracey Players donated £1,000 to the Bovey Paradiso project at their annual meeting, held at the Dolphin Hotel , Bovey Tracey.
After welcoming all those present, the chairman, Nigel Gillingham, presented the £1,000 to David Mcgahey, the chairman of Bovey Paradiso.
The Bovey Paradiso project is the local volunteer led programme to convert the old King of Prussia pub into an arts centre which already has a gallery, artists studios and a restaurant up and running.
The plan is to complete the programme by building a cinema/theatre at the rear of the building which will give The Players a much needed performance space. The Players were only too pleased to support the project.
Nigel continued the evening by reporting back on the past year, and the difficulties faced with getting things moving again after the pandemic.
With the support of a hard working committee a variety show had been presented in the autumn, and more recently a series of four theatre workshops led by professionals had been very successful and well attended. He reported that he now felt much more optimistic for the future of the group.
A play has now been cast and is in rehearsal to be presented towards the end of May.
‘Family Spirit’ is a light comedy drama which tells the story of Arthur who suddenly passes away, but has a few difficulties in passing to ‘the other side’. Directed by Mark Dunn, ‘Family Spirit’ will be presented at The Dolphin Hotel on May 18, 19 and 20.
Other projects are also being planned including play readings with a pint…and possibly street theatre.
Nigel said that the strength of The Players is in its membership, and it was good to see lots of new faces at the meeting.
However, they always welcome new members whatever their interest, as apart from performing there are always a whole range of activities that need support to get productions on the road.
If any one would like to be involved please contact one of The Players and keep a watch on their website and Facebook pages.
