FOLLOWING recent news that funding has been granted for a new cinema, the people at Bovey Paradiso have announced they’re already in the film business – albeit on small scale.

In a throwback to the classic British comedy The Smallest Show on Earth, the centre for the arts in Bovey Tracey is throwing open its gallery space for private screenings.

A spokesman said: ‘Our stated mission is to provide Bovey Tracey, Heathfield and surrounding areas with a wonderful new cinema and theatre facility.

‘Whilst we continue to fundraise for our new building, we will be hosting two different “pop-up” cinema experiences.’

The gallery space picture palace can be hired for up to 12 people who can view a selection of films while enjoying drinks from the bar – and before the main feature starts, customers can admire the artwork hnging on the walls.

Elsewhere in the town, the Wickham Hall in Ashburton Road will be staging Cinema Nights each month for up to 70 guests. Light refreshments and a licensed pay bar add to the ambience.

The first showing has just been held when the film A Private War was well received.

Already some 125 people have joined the new Paradiso Cinema Club. Members receive early notification of screenings, can book seats and help decide what films should be screened. To find out more or to join the club go to paradiso.org.uk.
