YES, it’s this Saturday, July 1!
The Dawlish Choral Society’s Summer Concert is a new work for many opera lovers, and full of delightful chirpy tunes and drama.
Handel’s Acis and Galatea deserves to be better known. It tells the classical story of happy nymphs and swains dancing to their engagement, and the catastrophe of the Cyclops’ jealous rage, murdering the hero Acis. What happens next is ‘divine’, and you must come and see it for yourselves.
Another disaster averted! The much appreciated soprano Carmen Lasok is unwell, but fortunately the equally talented Catherine Luke can step into the role of Galatea.
Acis is the romantic tenor, sung by Leslie Baker, a welcome return.
The monster Cyclops Polyphemus is sung by our Ian Spackman, full of powerful menace. The charming cameo role of the shepherdess is taken by our Alison Eden.
This choir photo was taken at our last concert, under our director, Nicholas Gardiner. You will see a difference this time. The singers will be decked out in summery ‘sweet pea’ colours to suit the performance, all sweetness and light.
The performance takes place at St Gregory’s Church, Dawlish, at 7.30pm this Saturday. Tickets £8 in advance, £9 on the door. Accompanied children free.
Interval refreshments in aid of Rowcroft Hospice. More information from our chairman, Ailsa Spackman, Tel: 01626 891584.
