FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot were called in to help tackle a fire that left a National Express coach burnt out.

Station 28’s Environmental Protection Unit (EPU) was called in to Thursday’s (January 16) incident in the Honicknowle area of Plymouth at around 3pm.

Other crews from six other stations also attended the fire, which saw a National Express coach ablaze.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service have said they believe the cause to be accidental.

Newton Abbot’s EPU were tasked with clearing up diesel that had leaked from the coach’s ruptured tank.

A spokesperson for Newton Abbot Fire Station said: ‘We utilised multiple blue oil absorbant pads to skim the surface of the water runoff in order to remove the diesel.

‘We also used the pads and clay Dammit mats to limit as much runoff water and oil going into the drains as possible.’

The coach was left ‘80 percent’ damaged, the fire service said.
