THE new Dawlish link road should soon be open, according to Teignbridge Council.

The authority says the link road and new bridge over Shutterton Brook is ‘approaching the final stages of construction’.

A spokesman for the council said: ‘When complete, construction traffic to the new 860 home development near Secmaton Lane will head out of Dawlish northwards towards Exeter, rather than going along Elm Grove Road and past two schools.

‘Upon being available to all traffic, the link road will also provide a bus route, cycling lanes, and footpaths, boosting more sustainable transport options.

‘This is a key step in achieving the goal of linking these new homes directly to the A379 Exeter Road / Sainsbury’s roundabout, and we are working in partnership with Devon County Council and Homes England to deliver the new road and bridge.’

Work on the £6.2million road was due to have finished this summer.

The scheme is aimed at easing congestion on the A379 by linking the road at Shutterton to housing development at Secmaton Farm.

Work on the link road started in 2023, seven years after it was originally planned.

Residents called it the ‘missing link’ road after hundreds of homes were built before any work on the relief road was started.
