IF you haven’t fancy a barbecue this glorious bank holiday weekend the ultimate barbecue is taking place in Kingsteignton today, Monday.

Kingsteignton Ram Roasting Fair is set to make this Bank Holiday Monday extra special.

With the fair returning on Monday, May 29, townspeople are all set to kick off the day at 11.45am.

May Queen, Zara Hug Williams, and Coronation Queen, Evie Hickson, will be crowned during the festivities at 1.15pm, and, of course, much roast ram will be consumed by those in attendance.

During the afternoon there will be circus skills workshops, stilt walking, donkey rides, inflatables, as well as several stalls, including Stover Canal Society and Devon & Cornwall Bushcraft.

Newton Abbot Fire and Rescue Service will also be on site.

Roast ram rolls will be served during the afternoon, and the Ram Fair beer tent will be serving real ales, cider, lager and wines.

Afternoon tea will be served in the senior citizens club with music provided by the Marldon Organ and Keyboard Club.

The Milestone Veterinary Centre Dog Show classes begin at 12.30pm.

The King’s Teignton Ram Roasting Fair can be traced back to the Middle Ages, and possibly still further back.

As the story goes, there was a severe drought in the village.

The shortage of water was such that there was not enough to baptise a child.

A child needing baptism was brought forward by its parents and the villagers went down to the dry bed of the stream where a ram was sacrificed.

Water sprang up at the spot, the baby was baptised and the supply of water restored.

In thanksgiving, the roasting of a ram became customary at Whitsuntide and has continued to the present time.

The fair is organised by a group of Kingsteignton towns people for the benefit and enjoyment of all those who live in the town.

A spokesman for the committee said: ‘We give special thanks to all our sponsors who have kindly donated towards the increasing costs of the fair and to the local companies who have donated raffle prizes.’
