WORK to gut Newton Abbot’s indoor market hall as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment scheme is well underway.
The work, which began late last year and is expected to last until the middle of 2026, is a part of Teignbridge District Council’s (TDC) five million pound regeneration project for the building.
TDC’s Executive Member for Economic Development, Cllr David Palethorpe, said that the council’s plans will ‘transform the space into an attractive and dynamic place for people to gather, shop and socialise with lots of opportunities for local businesses and a community venue for family friendly special events and live music’.
In some circles, however, the plans to regenerate the Grade II listed building are seen as unnecessary.
Newton Abbot Town Council’s planning committee rejected the plan, with one councillor describing it as ‘not a market anymore but a pub’.
