DARTMOOR’S last surviving hill pony auction took place in Chagford last week with more than 300 Dartmoor fillies, colts, riding ponies and mares going under the hammer.

The annual traditional Drift Pony Sale, organised by Rendells auctioneers with assistance Dartmoor Hill Pony Association, got underway at the town’s grass market last Thursday and proved that the sale and demand for these iconic ponies is not slowing down at all.

Generally regarded by the Dartmoor community as a social event in the past, the event now attracts buyers from all over the country and crowds were five deep around the ring at buyers vied to keep their eyes on their potential prize.

‘There was a huge interest in the sale from all over including Germany, Wales and Ireland,’ said a spokesman from auctioneers Rendells.

‘It was fantastic to see so many new buyers and as well and welcoming back regulars. The sale surpassed the 2020 event with the total average being £198.97, up £25.81 on the previous year.’

Top price of the day for the second year running went to Mr A Steed for the filly called Honey Pot who was knocked down to the lucky purchaser for £1627.50.

Mr Steed also made the second top priced lot of the day with the dun filly Hendawle Silver Lining realising £1412 in the ring.
