A FORMER Wren girl celebrated her 100th birthday this week.

Audrey Wilson, who lives in Dawlish, received her birthday message from the King and the Queen Consort on Febraury 17.

Born in Margate, Audrey was whisked off to India when she was only two-years-old as her father was a colonel in the Royal Army Dental Corps.

The family returned to England in 1931.

And it was in 1942 that Audrey, now a young woman, joined the Women's Royal Naval Service, popularly known as the Wrens.

As a part of the women’s branch of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy, Audrey was stationed in Whitehall in Combined Operations Headquarters, a department of the Briths War Office set up to harass the Germans through targeted raids.

In 1965, Audrey moved to Devon where she worked at the shop at Powderham Castle, eventually going on to run the shop at International Dance Supplies in Dawlish.

Around 30 or so people gathered at Exminster Golf Club for a special brunch to mark her birthday.
