TWO TEAMS of walkers took part in South Dartmoor Community College’s own ‘Ten Tors Trek’ event and raised more than £4,000.
Raising money for the college’s outdoor education department, the 11 undertook a 35-mile route across the North Moor in true Ten Tors fashion.
Their adventure included wild camping and a pasty and medal at the finish line.
Katie Upton, the Outdoor Education manager who runs the Ten Tors training and Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, said: ‘This incredible achievement will help to support so many students at South Dartmoor and Atrium so they too can benefit from these experiences.’
The fundraising will help students with costs for training, expeditions, and specific kit requirements, therefore making these opportunities more accessible to all students.
Steve Dinnie, a former head of sport for the college and supporter of the Outdoor Education team, presented the medals and commended the efforts of the staff and generous volunteers for bringing this event together and their training, support and dedication to the students throughout the season and on expeditions.
He said: ‘These events are so important for young people to build confidence, relationships and fitness as well as learning vital skills and gaining a sense of belonging.
‘It is fantastic that South Dartmoor are able to offer these opportunities.’
South Dartmoor has an incredible track record for Ten Tors entries over the years with great success and has an ever-growing successful DofE programme offering all three levels of the award, but there is no doubt that none of this would be possible without the time, commitment and good-will of the college staff and many volunteers from the community.
Many of this year’s trekkers have decided they want more, so if this has piqued your interest, please feel free to contact Heatherbelle on [email protected] or attend the information evening at South Dartmoor on Thursday, October 14, at 6.30pm in the Atrium building at South Dartmoor.
