DRAMATIC pictures from the scene of a gas leak that led to homes being evacuated have been released by Newton Abbot Fire Station.

Newton Abbot Police have already released details of the incident which saw a number of homes being evacuated after a strong smell of gas was reported in Abbotsbury Road in Newton Abbot on Sunday evening.

Releasing these pictures tonight, Tuesday, Newton Abbot Fire Station reports on its Facebook page: ‘Both of Newton Abbot's appliances, as well asour EPU (Environmental Protection Unit), were mobilised to reports of a strong smell of gas on Abbotsbury road.’

On arrival firefighters found a vehicle had collided with a wall.

‘The wall was at the boundary to a property, and the resulting damage from the impact caused the gas inlet to the property, which was being supplied from the underground main, to split and rupture.

‘The smell of gas was significant and could be heard roaring out of the inlet.

‘Due to the potential ignition and explosive risks, the IC (Incident Commander) made the decision to evacuate all the nearby homes.

‘Whilst the evacuation took place, crews set up a ground monitor in order to produce a cone of water to envelop the escaping gas and reduce the risk of any ignition.

‘During this time, Wales and West gas utilities arrived at the incident.

‘In order for the gas company to isolate the supply, the crews had to remove the vehicle. In order for this to happen, the crews first had to secure the collapsing wall.

‘This was done by using several strops in order to hold back the weight.Once the car was removed, Wales and West were able to isolate the gas and make the scene safe.

‘Crews worked alongside the gas company and the Police during this call.

‘Thankfully, the incident was brought to a safe close, with everyone being able to return home that evening.’
