DEVON is in the top three local authorities in England and Wales to have repaired the most potholes.

A new survey has rated the best and worst authorities for dealing with the menace of cracks and holes in the highways.

Devon has managed to repair a total of 31,590 potholes in 2022 out of 34,590 reported to highways engineers.

The study by a driving school was compiled after Freedom of Information requests were sent to all local authorities in England and Wales, asking for the total number of potholes reported in 2022, as well as the number of potholes repaired by the council.

Potholes are a blight on roads, characterised by depressions and cracks in the road surface, negatively impacting road users for decades.

Equally they are a menace for cyclists, horses and pedestrians.

Kirklees in Yorkshire topped the league of the highest number of reported potholes in 2022.

Across the borough, 22,513 potholes were reported, which is the same as 19.74 potholes per mile.
