NEWTON Abbot’s iconic clock tower will not chime on New Year’s Eve as it awaits repairs, it can be revealed.

St Leonard’s Tower will not be repaired in time to see in the New Year, the Mid-Devon Advertiser can confirm.

The clock stopped working after Smiths of Derby, one of Britain's largest and oldest clock manufacturers, performed repair on the east face.

An issue with the east face’s minute hand saw the company brought in, however upon completing the repairs issues arose with the west face, which was still operating having had its hands replaced earlier in the year.

The ancient clock mechanism, which requires a great deal of maintenance year round, has since stopped working.

Smiths of Derby are scheduled to return in the New Year.
